Eighty-Four Hockey Players Prepare for Ontario Under-17 Provincial Camp
Toronto – Eighty-four of the top 16-year-old hockey players in the province will be setting their sights on the Ice Gardens – York University in preparation for the Ontario Under-17 Program Provincial Camp.
The goal of the provincial camp is to provide the players with a competitive, high-calibre training opportunity. Coaching staff will assess the players during the 3-day camp as part of the ongoing process of identifying the twenty-two players who will ultimately be selected to represent Ontario at the 2005 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Lethbridge, Alberta December 29, 2003 to January 4, 2005.
"The process of evaluating the eighty-four players selected to attend this year’s camp will be a real challenge, as this is a very talented group of athletes," under-17 program Director of Operations, Mike Futa remarked. Futa, along with head coach James Boyd and assistant coaches Marty Williamson and Jason Brooks will be preparing and evaluating the attending players.
The eighty-four players were selected at various regional camps held throughout the province during April and May. There is representation at the camp from each branch and division in Ontario. In total, over 1,200 players attended the regional talent identification camps.
This year’s provincial camp will be hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League and will include on-ice and off-ice training sessions, guest speakers on a variety of topics, and daily scrimmage sessions.
The Ontario under-17 program is a component of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. The program is an Ontario Branch initiative facilitated by the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario. The program receives support from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation.
